Henkels & McCoy Timeline: 1994
 1994

The New Year begins on a sad note for Henkels & McCoy when Mrs. Anne Henkels, aged 96, breaks a leg in a fall at her home. She passes away on January 7, 1994. Anne Henkels was a great helpmate to founder John B. (Jack) Henkels, Jr. in the early days of Henkels & McCoy, and was instrumental in administering the day to day business.
During her lifetime she witnessed the transformation of a small, six-person operation into a truly international construction business employing 5,000 men and women. Devout in the profession of their faith, she and Jack brought civil rights to the workplace long before it was the law -- or the fashion. The husband and wife were also among America's first employers to provide medical and hospitalization insurance for employees, and they instituted one of the nation's very first profit-sharing plans. Mrs. Henkels had five children, as well as 57 grandchildren and 92 great-grandchildren. Eulogizing his mother, Paul M. Henkels says, "While we shall miss her tremendously, we cannot feel sorry for her, for she lived a long, enthusiastic, and productive life. And, as she remarked to so many people, she was very curious to see what was on the other side. Now she is there and, among other things, undoubtedly having a few long-awaited waltzes with Jack."

Among projects for Henkels & McCoy in 1994 are the placing of 10 miles of 115kV transmission line over rugged territory from Finksburg to Westminster, Maryland for Baltimore Gas & Electric. A helicopter is used to deliver and install 17 of the 95-feet high metal poles (right) in the most rugged terrain, where line trucks simply cannot go. Using the chopper, H&M crews shaved weeks off the schedule… South Central Bell awards H&M a contract for pole setting and direct-buried cable work in the northern part of Mississippi and southwest Tennessee… H&M's Industrial Division builds an environmentally-friendly power house at the Bergen Generating Station in Ridgefield Park, N.J. The company uses a new, hydraulic gantry to help install 140-ton turbines, 165-ton generators and two 142-ton transformers. Four new boilers at the facility release 95% less pollution than the previous system. H&M's portion of the project includes rigging, millwrighting, boilermaking, pipefitting and other mechanical work, including installation of a 40-foot long control center and the installing an overhead crane. Henkels & McCoy is also responsible for the building of a 360 x 220-foot power building, including installation of the HVAC system, plus electrical, masonry and concrete work… H&M is enlisted by Seaview Thermal Systems to build a 13-acre waste recycling system in Paterson, N.J. to clean 116,000 tons of approximately 250,000 tons of industrially polluted soil on the site of a former gas making facility, demolished in 1978… Meanwhile, out west, the California Division installs 37.5 miles of fiber optics west of Phoenix, Arizona over varied terrain for Electric Lightwave, Inc. of Vancouver, Washington. The project calls for aerial placement on existing electric transmission towers as well as plowing, trenching, and large scale directional boring under two rivers and two highways… In a freak ice storm strikes parts of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas, yanking lines from -- and then snapping-- utility poles. Once again, Henkels & McCoy dispatches crews to meet the challenge, sending 200 men and equipment from as far away as Oklahoma and Illinois to help restore power. Hardest hit is Mississippi. Crews remain on the multiple site job for as long as 16 days, pulling double shifts… In a reorganization move, H&M's old Delmarva Division is disassembled. Disparate elements are reassigned to headquarters, National Accounts, Rising Sun. New Jersey, Transmission & Distribution, and Delaware Valley divisions… J. Daniel Piggot, a 16-year company veteran, is named as acting manager of H&M's Engineering Division.
