Henkels & McCoy Board of Directors elect Paul M. Henkels as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
… New projects this year include high speed data wiring for a new Kodak Corporate building in Great Valley, Pa. and system evaluation and network planning for the National Broadcasting Company of New York City… H&M performs subcontractor work for Boeing Vertol Company designing a no-load test cell facility for a US Army depot in Corpus Christi, Texas… Other defense work includes a re-design of an HVAC system for a US Navy Aviation Supply Center… Called "a whale of a job" H&M’s Corrosion Control group is kept busy at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, upgrading the marine mammal tank. H&M has been providing corrosion control services to the facility prior to the aquarium’s opening, in 1981… Sadly, Marty Helmus passes away, in October. He joined the company in 1950 as a laborer on gas pipeline projects and worked his way up to foreman and then superintendent of all Philadelphia-area underground services. Mr. Helmus was responsible for the design and patent for the original Henkels & McCoy Railroad Cable Plow, an industry-changing innovation.

June 11
Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party wins rare third straight general election in Britain. She is returned as Prime Minister

July 2-4
Richard Branson (founder of Virgin Records, Virgin Atlantic Airways) and Per Lindstrand make the first transatlantic hot-air balloon flight. 2,790 miles from Maine, to Ireland.

July - August
Oliver North, Jr., (left, conferring with counsel) tells a congressional inquiry that "higher officials" approved his secret Iran-Contra operations... Admiral John M. Poindexter former National Security Adviser, testifies he authorized use of Iran arms sale profits to aid Contras... Secretary of State George P. Shultz testifies he was deceived repeatedly on Iran-Contra Affair... Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger tells inquiry of official deception and intrigue.

 

August 12
President Ronald Reagan says Iran-Contra policy went astray and accepts responsibility.

September 16
An international treaty signed in Montreal calls for a 50% reduction in the use of CFCs by the year.

October 1
Severe earthquake strikes Los Angeles, leaving 100 injured and six dead.
