All Engineering functions (communications, corrosion control and power) are consolidated into the new Henkels & McCoy Engineering Division
. Henkels & McCoy completes its largest project to date, a multi-million dollar 220 kV overbuild on the Reading Railroad, stretching from Jenkintown, Pa. to North Wales, Pa. ... Henkels & McCoy forms a new underwater division, consisting of four expert divers, for use in a variety of marine-related projects... Henkels & McCoy engineers design a brand new vibratory plow for use in a grueling plowing project in extremely rocky terrain in Portland, Oregon for Northwestern Natural Gas Company.

January 15
Super Bowl I, held in Los Angeles Coliseum. Both CBS and NBC broadcast the game. Green Bay Packers decisively defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. The victors take home $15,000 per player while the vanquished lick their wounds with a $7,500 balm.

January 27
Tragedy strikes NASA for the first time as Astronauts Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Col. Edward White II, and Lt. Cmdr. Roger B. Chaffee are killed in a fire during test launch.

May
American combat pilots shoot down 26 North Vietnamese jets, decreasing the North's pilot strength by half. Desperate air battles rage in the skies over the North Vietnam capital, Hanoi and the major northern port of Haiphong.

June 5
The Six-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors (primarily Syria and Egypt) ends in a stunning victory as Israel takes and occupies the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

June 17
Communist China announces explosion of its first hydrogen bomb.

July 23

Violent rioting erupts in southeast Detroit, following a police raid on an after-hours drinking club in a densely populated, poor black neighborhood. Unable to handle the large scale looting which follows the arrest of 80 patrons, local police are eventually aided by untested units of the Michigan National Guard, bringing assault troops and tanks into an urban setting. By the end of the five-day riot some 43 people will die, with almost 1,200 injured. Nearly 80% of fatalities are black. Just a few weeks prior to the Detroit riots, Newark is the scene of 23 deaths -- including six women and two children, in street rioting in that economically depressed New Jersey city. There are similar outbreaks in New York City's Spanish Harlem, in Rochester, New York, in Birmingham, Alabama, and in New Britain, Connecticut.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeat Boston in a 7-game World Series.

November 1
US population reaches 200 million.

December 1
There are approximately 500,000 US troops stationed in South Vietnam.

December 3
Dr. Christiaan Barnard performs the world's first heart transplant in South Africa. His patient survives for 18 days.

Jones (6-3 6-4) in the Women's Singles, John Newcombe beats W. Bungert (6-3 6-1 6-1) in the Men's tourney... In College sports, the NCAA Basketball Championship goes to UCLA who defeat Dayton (79-64)... the NCAA Football Champions are USC (10-1-0).

At the Movies
