1957

Henkels & McCoy is called upon by the Boy Scouts of America to work on 1957’s Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pa. This is a reprise role for Henkels & McCoy, having been a major contractor for the 1950 event attended by then President of the United States Harry S. Truman and also by D-Day hero (and current US President), General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Another family and youth-oriented and unique project is the Green Lane Recreation Area in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, on an 800-acre property situated on the Perkiomen Creek and owned by Philadelphia Suburban Water Company. Henkels & McCoy crews raze existing buildings, clear the land and build roads in preparation for a dam and large lake, The firm sells Philadelphia Suburban on making it a recreation area. In addition, the firm constructs concession stands and purchases rental boats. When completed, the Recreation Area will include camping, fishing, and picnic areas. A subsidiary company is formed to equip and operate the recreation area. The park will officially open in 1959.

Chuck Berry (left) hits #2 on the R&B chart and #29 on the pop chart with the Chess single "Roll Over Beethoven." Berry is generally acknowledged as one of the prime originators of Rock & Roll and will be one of the first artists inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (located in Cleveland, Ohio) in January of 1986.

US Marine pilot John Glenn flies supersonic aircraft from California to New York in under 3-1/2 hours, establishing new transcontinental speed record.

International Atomic Energy Agency established.

Ford Motors launches the ill fated Edsel, named after Edsel Ford, one of the founder's children.

October 4
Beep beep beep...The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1, first satellite to orbit the earth.

November 3
Sputnik 2 launched. An experimental dog, Laika (Barker), is first living being to travel to outer space.

November 26
President Eisenhower suffers a third stroke.

December 6
US launches Project Orion, designed to build nuclear powered spacecraft.

December 6
The Civil Rights Commission is created under the auspices of the Civil Rights Act.

The Boeing 707 becomes the world’s first jet airliner to enter passenger service.
