Henkels & McCoy completes a long term airfield lighting project for US Naval Air Stations along the East Coast in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware... H&M expands on an existing tree trimming and removal program using new power driven tools and mechanized equipment to help clear lines for utility companies from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.

Nationwide, polio kills 3,300 people of 57,628 cases reported It is the worst epidemic since1916. A polio vaccine is discovered by Dr. Jonas E. Salk this year but will not be approved for use in humans until 1955... Eduard Haas’ Pez candy makes US debut. To boost the candy’s initially laggard sales Haas will later reinvent the product with revolutionary packaging -- a dispenser with cartoon heads and a variety of flavors. The word Pez comes from the German word for peppermint or Pfefferminze.

Today, NBC's morning news, chat and popular culture broadcast makes its debut... First UHF television station debuts in Oregon... US television broadcasts first political advertisements... Atomic bomb detonation is broadcast on television for the first time. CBS is king of TV with I Love Lucy as the top rated program, followed by Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and Arthur Godfrey and His Friends. NBC's Dragnet is number 4.
