Henkels & McCoy 's entry in the Philadelphia Flower
Show and takes First Prize for the fourth year in a row, this time
in the Garden category.
The show's winning criteria is "principal feature: spring
flowering bulbs and other flowering plants suitable for use with
them."
At this time, landscaping is one of our primary lines of business.

At the order of Spanish Nationalist leader Generalissimo Francisco
Franco, the Spanish hamlet of Guernica is bombed by the German
Luftwaffe, testing new Heinkel fighters, Junkers Trimotor bombers
and incendiary bombs as a warmup to the blitzkreigs of the Second
World War.
Young anti-fascists from the US, England, France, and other
countries -- and from fascist-controlled Germany and Italy--
volunteer to fight alongside Spanish Republicans.
April 27
First Social Security checks are distributed to retired persons in
the US.May 6
The German dirigible Hindenberg explodes while docking in Lakehurst,
N.J. Thirty-six are killed in the conflagration that ends
lighter-than-air passenger travel.
May 27
Golden Gate Bridge opens, San Francisco.

Joe Louis KOs James Braddock to capture boxing's heavyweight

The abstract artist Pablo
Picasso, painted Guernica, above, following the atrocity. Six
years after the death of Franco in 1975, the mural was displayed in
Spain's national museum of modern art. Below, the Hindenberg explodes while docking

Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappear over the Pacific
Ocean attempting first flight around the world at the Equator.

George Gershwin dies at age 38.
August 14
Dedication of the Appalachian Trail. The 2,000 plus mile path
extends from Georgia to Maine. Among the Trail’s successful hikers
will be Paul M. Henkels, Jr., who completed the grueling Appalachian
Trail Through-Hike in August, 1996 after some four and one-half
months.
September 1
The US Housing Authority is created.
December 22
Lincoln Tunnel opened to public; connects midtown Manhattan with New
Jersey.
