Outside Plant: Railroad Plow / Evolution
Plow Evolution
1967 1968 1970 1983 1998
Original model developed. Mechanical arm and blade attaches to existing railroad flatcar, thinly slicing the earth next to the tracks. Plow successfully
tested on 2.5 miles of the Reading Company's
Stony Creek Branch in Pennsylvania.
Henkels & McCoy receives patent for plow. Second generation
plow developed. Reach of plow arm increases, enabling cable to be buried further from the edge of the rails. Additional improvement is the capability of operating from either side of the car without reversing the train.
Plans announced for a third generation plow, since patented. This generation features a variable ballast system that can be adapted to multiple track gauges.
